In 1992, the US Department of Labor published the Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) report entitled “Learning for Living: A Blueprint for High Performance.” This report articulate the three SCANS “Foundation Skills” and the five SCANS “Competencies” that defined the know-how that students and workers need for workplace success.
“Teaching the SCANS Competencies” provides schools with examples of how to teach the foundation skills and competencies and gives examples of ten organizations that developed model programs to strengthen the school-to-work efforts.
The Critical Skills Group is one of these ten organizations and is profiled on pages 58-59.
