Building and Managing a Fulfilling Career – #3: The Doom Loop

The Career Challenge You Didn’t See Coming

Have you ever felt frustrated or bored in your job? If so, you’re not alone. Studies show that workplace frustration and job boredom severely impact productivity and job satisfaction, often leading to career mistakes that could have been avoided. However, instead of fearing this experience, you can use it to your advantage—if you understand why it happens.

The answer comes from career development principles and applied mathematics—specifically, differential equations. While you don’t need a background in calculus to grasp this concept, it provides a data-driven foundation for career progression and job satisfaction.

How the Doom Loop Was Created

I developed the Doom Loop over 40 years ago while interviewing an MBA student at Harvard Business School for a major management consulting firm. The student wanted to be a consultant, but it was clear that he wasn’t a good fit. Rather than outright rejecting him, I wanted to guide him toward the realization himself.

To do this, I used a simple two-by-two career matrix, inspired by the well-known approach of the Boston Consulting Group. On the X-axis, I placed “Like” and “Don’t Like.” On the Y-axis, I placed “Good At” and “Not Good At.” This created four distinct quadrants:

As we discussed the realities of consulting—travel, detailed reports, and client demands—it became clear to the student that his preferences and skill set placed him in Q4 (Not Good At / Don’t Like). Without me rejecting him, he realized on his own that consulting was not the right fit.

The Epiphany: How This Applies Over Time

After that conversation, I had an epiphany: If you take just two variables—career preferences and job performance—and track them over time, you can actually predict how a person will feel in a given role.

But what happens if you stay in the same job, doing the same tasks, over a long period of time? This question led me to apply differential equations to career progression, mapping job satisfaction over time. The result? A career trajectory that follows a predictable path of engagement, stagnation, and decline.

The Evolution of the Doom Loop

Let’s assume an individual starts in a new role where they enjoy most tasks, but some are still unfamiliar. At the time (T1) he/she takes the job, the career satisfaction matrix might look like this:

As the person gains experience and develops new skills, their competence increases. Over time  and at T2, most tasks shift into Q2 (Like / Good At)—the peak of their career satisfaction and productivity.

However, if the job remains unchanged for too long, the individual will eventually master all tasks. Without new challenges at T3, they enter Q3 (Good At / Don’t Like), where frustration and job dissatisfaction set in.

If nothing changes, at T4, frustration deepens into Q4 (Not Good At / Don’t Like), leading to full disengagement, reduced productivity, and career stagnation.

This predictable career trajectory is what I call the Doom Loop. And when the curve enters the quadrant Q3, the person is “Doomed” in that job.

But there’s hope!

The Doom Loop isn’t something to fear—it’s something to understand and use strategically for long-term career success and professional growth. Here’s what you should know:

The Doom Loop is based on career psychology and mathematical modeling. The concept is backed by differential equations tracking job satisfaction, engagement, and stagnation over time.

It is a universal career phenomenon. Every job, no matter how exciting at first, follows a predictable career stagnation cycle.

It is dynamic and changes over time. Your job satisfaction and motivation will evolve based on the tasks you perform and your ability to develop new skills.

It can be anticipated and managed. If you recognize career stagnation early, you can take proactive steps to prevent disengagement and plateauing.
